One of my goals in 2014 was to find a way to give back. In the teaching profession, time is a valuable commodity. Outside of the classroom, my time is spent lesson planning, grading, and dreaming about school. I knew I needed to find an opportunity where the time I spent volunteering was meaningful.
Interviewing to be a Big Sister, I never imagined how fortunate I would be to find a Little Sister like mine. While it is definitely a commitment, it’s one that I wouldn’t change. She has taught me that it’s ok to let loose, do things just for fun and not worry about what others will think of you. She writes poetry and then finds competitions to enter, talks about a visit to the Science Museum as the best day of her life and is quite a forward-thinking young lady.
In the beginning I worried whether I would pick the right activities or have something in common to talk about. Then I realized that just giving her my time is enough.
Here are some of the adventures we’ve been on—more to come!
